LSU Museum of Art Announces Two October Exhibitions: In a New Light and The Marvel of Old Masters
Baton Rouge, LA – The LSU Museum of Art (LSUMOA) presents two upcoming exhibitions, In a New Light: American Impressionism 1870–1940, Works from the Bank of America Collection and Rembrandt, Goya, and Dürer: The Marvel of Old Masters, opening in October 2024.

In a New Light: American Impressionism 1870–1940, Works from the Bank of America Collection

This landmark exhibition explores the evolution of American Impressionism and its unique reinterpretation of the American landscape. Featuring more than 130 works by a diverse range of artists, In a New Light traces the development of American Impressionism from its early influences through its flourishing into a distinctly American style.
The exhibit contextualizes American Impressionism by positioning it between earlier movements like the Hudson River School and the emerging modernist trends of the early 20th century. Visitors will experience how American artists used the techniques of capturing light and atmosphere with quick brushstrokes, vivid colors, and an emphasis on nature, cityscapes, and daily life. The exhibition highlights regional artist colonies that played a key role in interpreting the American landscape—rural, maritime, and urban settings alike.
This exhibition is made possible through the Bank of America Art in our Communities® program and provides a comprehensive look at the changes in American art from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century.

Rembrandt, Goya, and Dürer: The Marvel of Old Masters

This exhibition showcases over 60 engravings, etchings, and woodcuts by three of history’s most renowned printmakers: Rembrandt van Rijn, Francisco Goya, and Albrecht Dürer. Spanning 300 years of masterful printmaking, this exhibit provides a rare opportunity to view these timeless works up close.
Albrecht Dürer (German, 1471–1528) was celebrated for his detailed engravings and woodcuts, achieving mastery in both mediums. His technical brilliance and innovative approach influenced generations of artists.
Rembrandt van Rijn (Dutch, 1606–1669), known for his profound ability to capture light and emotion, brought printmaking to new heights with his etchings. His admiration for Dürer’s work is evident in his own skillful use of the medium, which remains unrivaled.
Francisco Goya (Spanish, 1746–1828), court painter and master etcher, once declared his three artistic influences to be nature, Rembrandt, and Velázquez. Goya’s groundbreaking prints are celebrated for their boldness and emotional depth.
This exhibition not only highlights the technical skill and vision of these three artists but also explores the shared thread of excellence that connects them across centuries. Curated by Leigh Hendry and organized by Carole Sorell, The Marvel of Old Masters is generously loaned by the Park West Foundation.

VISITOR INFORMATION
The museum is located in downtown Baton Rouge at 100 Lafayette Street on the Fifth Floor of the Shaw Center for the Arts. General admission is $5 each for adults and children age 13 and over. Admission is free to university faculty and students with ID, children age 12 and under, and museum members. Active-duty military and veterans, first responders, and their families receive free admission with ID as part of the Blue Star Museums program. Show your EBT card and photo ID at the admissions desk and receive free admission for up to 4 individuals as part of the Museums for All initiative. Museum Hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m.; Sunday 1-5 p.m.; and closed on Mondays and major holidays.
